Switching your home energy supplier: Myths busted

Switching energy suppliers is often seen as a daunting task by many consumers. There are many misconceptions which result in customers remaining with their same supplier in fear of something going wrong during the switch.

By not switching and comparing offerings to get a better deal, many people are paying a lot more for their energy than necessary. Here, we will address and dispel many of the myths surrounding switching supplier.

You won’t be cut off

Despite what you may read online, you will maintain your energy supply throughout the switching process. Even though you are switching supplier, your energy remains unchanged. The only thing that effectively changes is where your bill comes from.

You won’t need new pipes installed

Because your actual energy is not changing as explained above, you will not need any new pipes or additional work to be completed when switching your supplier.

You’re not always guaranteed the best deal on a comparison site

Whilst comparison sites have made things incredibly convenient for consumers and you get the impression that whole market is being scoured for deals, the reality is that it isn’t. There are many suppliers that are not on price comparison sites, so you are never guaranteed to get the best deal. The best thing to do is, do your research before agreeing a deal.

You won’t be charged twice

You can only ever have one supplier at a time, so it would be impossible for both your existing and new supplier to be billing you at the same time.

You don’t have to tell your current supplier you’re switching  

Like we mentioned earlier, you can only ever have one supplier at a time so when it comes time to switching your new supplier simply takes over your meter. The only time you’ll have to contact your old supplier is to supply your final meters reads to ensure an accurate final bill.

You CAN change your mind

Unlike with business energy contracts, you do have a cooling off period following switching your home energy. You have 14 days from the day you agree a new contract to change your mind.

You can switch in less than a month

Some people quote ‘hassle’ and ‘time consuming’ as reasons for not switching energy supplier; however, the process is straight-forward and can be completed quickly. By not switching, people are likely to be missing out on cost savings as shopping around generally results in customers getting better prices.
