Earth Hour

5 Ways your business can make a difference during Earth Hour

What is Earth Hour?

Having its origins in Sydney back in 2007, the WWF organised Earth Hour has now grown to be the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment. Since its inception, millions of people around the world have been inspired to act for the protection of our planet and nature.

Held annually at the end of March, Earth Hour was devised as a way of encouraging individuals, businesses and local communities to turn off non-essential electricity for one designated hour.

Last year, more than 10.4 million Brits joined in with the Palace of Westminster, Buckingham Palace, The Shard, The Ritz hotel, Old Trafford and Edinburgh Castle dimming their lights.

When is Earth Hour?

This year’s Earth hour is Saturday 30th March 2019 at 8:30pm.

How can my business get involved?

  1. Sign up at wwf.org.uk/earthhour and add you company to the Earth Hour map to spread the word that you’re taking part.
  2. Switch off as many lights and machinery in your building that you can- room lights, monitor screens etc.
  3. Organise a team bonding activity to keep staff busy and engaged. For example, hold an energy management awareness workshop where staff can generate new ideas to make future energy savings.
  4. Make use of your connections! Encourage your business partners and other local organisations to take part. If Earth Hour is approaching too quickly for them to act, plan some together for the future in honour of Earth Hour.
  5. Extend the hour! Don’t just stop at 9:30pm, plan future events in honour of earth hour such as staff volunteering exercises to clear plastic from a local beach or park.
